Makeup: sometimes a girl’s best friend, sometimes her worst enemy. There are times where I’m really feeling the smokey eye and bold lip, and others where I can’t stand to have anything on my face. Every girl’s relationship with makeup is a little different. Some girls may never wear makeup at all and I’m sure their skin loves them for that. For me, it depends entirely on my mood. This makes packing makeup for trips very very difficult because I never know what kind of mood I’ll end up being in. Here are a few of my biggest tips when it comes to packing makeup for an upcoming trip.
Now I know everyone is probably rolling their eyes or thinking “sunscreen makes me break out.” I’m right there with you. Except, with all the advances in makeup (thank you science) SPF comes in so many different forms now! If I plan on wearing foundation, my go to is Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation. I love that it’s buildable, feels and looks super natural, AND has SPF 15 without making me break out.
If you’re not huge on foundation, I recently discovered CC cream. I had tried BB cream before and had a horrible experience. It was SO oily and made me break out like crazy. Fortunately, I stumbled upon IT Cosmetics CC Cream Oil-Free Matte with SPF 40. Not only does it have a high SPF, but it’s built for people with oily skin! There are also normal (non-oil free) versions of the CC cream as well. This was my go to in Bali or really anywhere where humidity is off the charts and I plan on being in lots of direct sunlight.
Lastly, if liquid isn’t your jam, sunscreen now comes in powder forms. My two favorites are Tarteguard Mineral Powder Sunscreen SPF 30 and Colorscience Sunforgettable Total Protection SPF 50. I love powder sunscreen because it makes reapplication SO EASY! I’m not about to stop in the middle of something fun and start reapplying messy liquid sunscreen. But, dabbing some powder on my face makes it so easy to keep my skin protected from the sun.
This is the MOST important item on this list and should be the first thing you pack in your makeup bag!
I have the most oily skin in the world! So, primer is an absolute MUST for me. It doesn’t matter whether I’m wearing foundation or not, I typically put a light layer of Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Face Primer on my face to help mattify my very oily skin.
I also have very oily eyelids. For this reason, even if I’m not wearing eyeshadow, I still use a dab of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion to help lessen the shine. I’ve tried other brands but I seem to always come back to these two. If you have dry skin, primers may not be absolutely necessary if you’re not wearing makeup. However, even with dry skin, primers helps makeup go on even and stay all day.
This is pretty high up on my list because in a rush, I put on SPF and fill in my brows, and I’m good to go. Some girls are super lucky and have super thick brows. Mine aren’t thin per say, but they’re definitely not thick. I always feel the need to fill in my brows just a bit to help really frame my face. My go to when I’m getting ready quick is the Colourpop Precision Brow Pencil. It’s very similar to the Anastasia pencil but costs about $20 less and works just as well IMO. If I’m doing a fuller face of makeup, I may use the Colourpop Taken for Granite Precision Brow Color. However, if I’m tight on packing space I’ll stick with just the brow pencil and my eyebrows still look great!
Lips are my jam! I’m not huge on eyeshadow/eyeliner, but sometimes, I want to look a little more made up. I was lucky enough to be blessed with naturally full lips so I love to play up that part of my face. My absolute go to lip color is Huda Liquid Matte Lipstick in Trophy Wife. I love the color because I can dress it up or down. But regardless of color, Huda makes THE BEST formula liquid matte lipsticks. They go on smooth, keep your lips moisturized while giving a matte look, and don’t clump up too fast. I can eat, drink, and still have my lipstick look great.
Huda lipsticks are a bit expensive, coming in at about $20 per tube. So, if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, I also love Colourpop Liquid Lipsticks. However, the formula of Colourpop Liquid Lipsticks seem to vary, whereas every Huda Liquid Lipstick I’ve owned works the same.
Don’t forget lipliner! I use lipliner no matter what color I wear, but I find it absolutely necessary for more pigmented colors. Any liner will do depending on how you like your lips to look.
So, I made a BIG change in my eyelash routine over the past couple months. I’ve always had naturally long and healthy lashes (we’re talking touched by eyebrows and hit my glasses). They were so long in fact, I constantly got asked if they were fake. However, I noticed wearing mascara would get annoying (oily eyelids made the mascara come off too easy) and I absolutely HATED applying falsies when I was going for a more dramatic look. I had always heard about eyelash extensions but was scared they would ruin my naturally long and healthy lashes.
Then, my friend became licensed and started doing lash extensions. She convinced me to come in and try it out. Worst case, I could take them off if I didn’t like them. I went in for one appointment and never looked back! I could be wearing zero makeup but lash extensions make me look ready to go. They’re super comfortable, and while you can definitely tell they are extensions, they look natural enough. I go with a light volume so my lashes aren’t overpowering my face, and a 15 in length (which is the length of my longest natural lashes). I also never wear mascara or eyeliner, and very rarely wear eyeshadow anymore.
Now, lash extensions won’t be for everyone. If you’re looking for a killer mascara my go to was Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes. I’ve tried so many others but would always come back to this one. If you still haven’t found one you like, I highly recommend buying the Sephora Mascara Sets (not always available). These sets come with about 5 travel size mascaras and a coupon for any full size of the mascaras. This means you get 5 travel size mascaras and a full size one all for $25. You can’t beat it AND you get to try different kinds.
The above are my go to when it comes to beauty on the road. However, if you find yourself with a little extra room for cosmetics there are a couple other things I’d recommend. I no longer wear eyeliner. However, when I did, Tarte Sex Kitten Liquid Liner was my favorite! For eyeshadow, I’m more of a neutrals person. I love traveling with Urban Decay Naked2 Basics Eyeshadow Palette. I really have zero clue what I’m doing when I contour. But, when I attempt it, my go to is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit. And lastly, I love a good sparkle. Instead of highlighter, I typically use Urban Decay Naked Illuminated Shimmering Powder.
When all of this is too many individual items to pack, or I’m just feeling lazy, I’ll grab an all in one makeup set. My favorite is the Manna Kadar Paris Luxurious Makeup Palette. It comes with eyeshadows (highly pigmented), blush, highlighter, bronzer, and face powder. Not only is the makeup set amazing, but Manna is a personal friend and total #momgoals #friendgoals #wifegoals #bossgoals, just straight up #goals!
So to recap, every person’s “essentials” will look a little bit different. My list of essentials includes the following:
- Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation
- Tarteguard Mineral Powder Sunscreen SPF 30
- Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Face Primer
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
- Colourpop Precision Brow Pencil
- Huda Liquid Matte Lipstick in Trophy Wife
- Manna Kadar Paris Luxurious Makeup Palette
If the seven makeup items listed above were all I had on a trip, I could rock any look from hiking in Guatemala to red carpet events in Paris.
